We tell women, girls and people everywhere to love their body exactly the way it is, that they’re beautiful no matter what and that their weight or appearance doesn’t define them. We say this because it’s true! However, many of us can agree that the way we perceive our own body image isn’t always the same as how others see us! We’re a lot harder on ourselves then we should be and that’s why we are so receptive to all of the tricks that the media throws at us- like “Skinny Tea” or “Gweneth Paltrow Detox Tips.”
That’s why when becoming more #bodypositive, we need to start with ourselves first. We can’t go around promoting healthy body image to others if we’re sitting at home comparing ourselves to the people we see on Instagram or Pinterest. Being #bodypositive means finding beauty in healthy women of all shapes and sizes whether they are a size 20+ or a size 0, as long as they are healthy and happy then it isn’t up to us to judge and that includes ourselves.
I’ve gathered a few ways to start loving your body exactly the way that it is. Let us know if any of these work for you or comment on the post and share with us some of your #bodypositive tips!
1. Wear clothes that fit
Don’t wait until you lose weight before you buy yourself clothes that fit and make you feel good. Donate all the clothes that don’t fit you, or if at least put them out of the way. While it’s great to have inspiration if slimming down is your goal, it’s not great to be constantly wishing you could fit into a dress you wore 10 years ago. Physical changes take time and you should celebrate the small milestones first without putting too much pressure on yourself to get to a certain point right away.
2. Don’t put your life on hold
Stop putting your life on hold until you’ve lost weight. Make a list of all the things you’re waiting to do until you’re “smaller”- the hobbies you’ll take up, the clothes you’ll buy, the trips you’ll go on, etc. Whatever it is, don’t wait, do it now! Life is short and it should be enjoyed. Besides- all bodies are beautiful bodies and there are many women putting their own lives on hold until they look like you.
3. Self compassion
Check out Pinterest or stay tuned for our future blog posts and look for some mindful self-compassion exercises and do them daily. Learn to take a step back and think,
“Would I treat a loved one like I treat myself?”
If the answer is no, then start thinking about how you could be kinder to yourself. A journal is a great place to start and become mindful about your vocabulary when talking about/to yourself.
4. Ability not weight
Try to focus your fitness goals on ability, not weight loss. Get excited when you’re able to run a further distance or lift heavier. Ditch the scale because that is a really easy way to get discouraged! Did you know muscle weighs more then fat does? Someone who appears to be very lean with abs and toned arms could be the same weight as someone who appears to be much heavier with no defined muscles. In the end it doesn’t matter how much you weigh as long as you’re healthy and happy.
5. Online Bubble
We always tell young girls to not compare themselves to those that they seen in magazines or in the media. However, we’re at a turning point in technology where anyone can be a model or public figure thanks to Instagram and Youtube. Stop following anyone who makes you feel bad about yourself, talks about “thinspo” or doesn’t promote healthy body image to others. Instead, start following people who inspire you, push you to be healthy and make you want to live a better life. This includes friends, co-workers and family that you may have on Facebook- maybe it’s time to click the “unfollow” button on that closed-minded cousin who shares all the negative posts.
6. Spread positivity & compliment others
#womensupportingwomen is our favourite hashtag here at Halifax Boudoir! Get rid of the jealous streak and start complimenting other women when they have something you wish you had or do something that you wish that you had done! Think about how nice it feels to get complimented, why wouldn’t you want to be the one to give others that feeling? Often times, you’ll even receive a compliment back which is always a nice bonus.
It’s a lot better to be known as the person who gives out nice compliments and supports other women than to be known as the one who tears other women down because she’s not comfortable in her own skin.
7. Book a Boudoir Shoot
Last but not least, of course we had to include this one! How else to celebrate your body then to book a boudoir shoot with us. At Halifax Boudoir, we strive to empower women and show each woman who comes in why they should love their bodies just the way they are.
You may have a few reasons why you’ve been holding off on booking your shoot which is why we wrote this blog post to de-bunk any excuses you may have:
To conclude, we think it’s great to want to get in shape to become a healthier version of yourself however we want to stress to all of our readers that you shouldn’t do it just to be “thin” because as you can see from our photos- we shoot women of all sizes and they are all beautiful. Focus on being healthy and happy and everything else will fall into place. Do your best to inspire every woman to be the best version of herself because as you may have heard, the future is female!
